Arranging an appointment

We are constantly trying to improve our appointment system to allow better access to GPs and Nurses.

At Avicenna, in line with many other surgeries we triage all requests for GP and Advanced Care Practitioners. This ensures that you will have a same day consultation with a healthcare professional who will either deal with your issue or direct you to the most appropriate person for your needs.

Your first contact will be with our receptionists who will take some brief details and then pass them on to our Advanced Care Practitioners who will call you to assess your request, and offer treatment and advice on the phone if appropriate. If necessary they will arrange a video consultation with themselves, an appointment with themselves, or arrange for you to have a consultation with the GP, Nurse, or another appropriate person depending on your need.

The majority of treatment and advice can be done via telephone or video consultation.

However, if there is a need for a direct examination an appointment will be offered for the same day, or for non-urgent or complex problems booked in advance with the most appropriate person.

Please make sure you give the receptionists enough information so that the clinical triage team can make an assessment of the urgency and nature of your problem.

If you need same day treatment and advice

Please make sure you call between 8am and 9am so that the clinical triage team is informed as soon as possible about the nature and urgency of your problem.

Calls at a later time will not be dealt with and you will be asked to call the following day between 8am and 9am

Routine appointments and enquiries

Please call between 9am and 11am for appointments with Nurses and Healthcare Assistants

Please call after 11am for routine repeat prescription requests or use our online ordering system

Cancelling an appointment

If you are unable to keep your appointment please inform the surgery as soon as possible or use our online appointment system via SystmOnline (see below) so that your appointment can be used for another patient.

Online appointments

If you are already registered for booking online you can click the button below to book or cancel appointments via SystmOnline. You cannot book online appointments for GP and Advanced Care Practitioners. Online booking is for Nurse and Healthcare assistant appointments only

If you would like to register for online booking please come into the surgery and speak to a receptionist. In the interests of patient confidentiality, and to protect your privacy, new registrations for SystmOnline must be carried out in person.

If you are already registered for SystmOnline, and would like to have more detailed access to your medical records, or if you are not yet registered for SystmOnline and would like to be, please come into the surgery with a form of photo ID (for example, passport, driving licence, student ID, bus pass, blue badge, photo ID from work etc).

When the surgery is closed

In the event of an emergency outside of surgery hours, please ring 111. A trained receptionist will answer your phone call and you will be offered either telephone advice from a doctor, a consultation at the emergency primary care centre, a visit by a doctor, or other appropriate treatment. This will be decided on medical need. Further information on the 111 Service may be obtained from a separate leaflet, which is available on request from the Practice, or can be downloaded here (there is also an easy-read version available).

Extended access

Extended Access Clinics are now available, including weekend appointments with GPs, Nurses, HCAs and Physiotherapists.

These are held at various sites across Bradford.

Please note this is not a walk-in service and you will need to book an appointment in advance.

These are pre-bookable, routine appointments. For more information please speak to a member of reception.

Home visits

Home visits are for serious illnesses, and for people who are housebound. Requests for home visits can be made by telephoning the surgery on (01274) 664464. Please telephone before 9am, as this helps the clinical triage team to assess the urgency and need for a visit. If you can give the receptionist a brief description of the problem, the doctor will have some idea of the urgency of the call.

Automated Patient check-in

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve patient satisfaction, we have an automated patient check-in, which allows patients to check in without having to queue at Reception. This is located in the main waiting room area. The system is simple to use. Just touch the screen and identify yourself using a combination of your gender and date of birth. Your appointment will be confirmed on the screen and you will be directed to the correct waiting area. The GP or nurse will know that you are waiting.
